Christian Burns

From the forward-looking, Jan-hopeful lean of his most recent single “Fall To You,” Christian Burns moves onto the slightly less sanguine sounding “Darker Days.”

After all, every lighter yin must result in some shadowy yang, right??

Well not necessarily, as “sounding” is very much the operative word here, as once again Christian delivers the electronic music space a song and sonic of infinitely mesmeric and optimistic appeal.

Key to turning the ostensibly downbeat into the heartening, is the sway that Christian’s haunting, drifting vocals holds. It’s a tone that regularly seems to exist between the seconds of his music, as opposed to inside them, its ethereal lift carrying the sense of memories partially remembered, but never fully salvaged.

Through subtle tenacity, “Darker Days” lyrics chart the internal (yet eternal) struggle of human isolation and self-doubt. It reframes vulnerability however as something more universal, reflecting loneliness as an oddly communal and unconsciously shared experience. Through the insistence of Christian’s “never surrendering” refrain, the song’s promise emerges not suddenly, but through stubborn persistence.

While Christian’s own production works fully within its abiding air of chill, Anjunadeep watchmen Avenue One (Matt Cerf and Petr Lesko) uptick it to cooler, clubbier climes. Working their mix into a sleekly polished progressive house / trance hybrid, through its linear grooves, bass movements, insistent percussion and killer fx, it drops with supreme floor authority.

Christian’s next step towards “Love Songs From Suburbia”’s LP successor (forthcoming 2026) has been taken. The unconventional lift of “Darker Days” is at hand, and available through the best online streaming and sales platforms here from today. [blackhole.lnk.to/Darker]. Frankyeffe – Out Of This World EP

Tim Stark

Frankyeffe’s calling it an “EP”, though others might argue it’s closer to a full album. Either way, ‘Out Of This World’ makes one thing abundantly clear: when it comes to midnight studio oil and full-throated clubland firepower, Italy’s Francesco Fava’s not a man to do things by halves. Fresh from his ‘One More Night’ outing […]

Waking Up In A Northern Town by Christian Burns

Tim Stark

There’s been a long tradition of musicians from the north of England honouring their origins through their recordings – one that dates back as far as The Beatles’ penning ‘Penny Lane’. ‘North Country Boy’, ‘Hit The North’, ‘Life In A ‘Northern Town’, ‘The North At Its Heights’, ‘It’s Grim Up North’ – just a few […]
