March/April 2019 Issue

Our March/April 2019 issue of BEATSELECTOR Magazine marks a shift in our publishing frequency. With this edition, the days of publishing our magazine every quarter are now behind us as we move forward to a six (6) issue annual schedule. Challenging? Yes. Relevant? We think so.

To kick off this publishing shift, we decided to stir things up a bit with an Opinion Editorial piece on a subject that we anticipate will open discussion and conversation– “Overrated and Underrated” DJs and producers in today’s current environment. Zach Miller and Cody Miller identify 12 artists and address-through their opinions-who is overrated and who is underrated and why they feel the way they do. Some will agree while others will not.

Our other features include Q&A with an underground Los Angeles based DJ and producer known as Principleasure in which we discuss his new album, analogue electronics and heroes. We also feature a Q&A with Alex ‘Kiwi’ Warren who has risen from humble beginnings as an in-house photographer…

Issue N°15

The Crystal Method’s Scott Kirkland is back in action. In recent weeks, Kirkland has been playing gigs, giving interviews and promoting his terrific new album “The Trip Home.” Given the opportunity to interview Kirkland at the cusp of his rebirth and leading TCM as a solo act, was truly a privilege. In the back and forth, Scott takes us inside his early successes with co-founder and close friend, Ken Jordan, the continual impact of their multi-platinum album “Vegas,” and of course his thoughts on his new album.

Issue N°14

For our 14th issue, Catherine Strickland gets the choice Cover Feature assignment of quizzing rising producer Chris Knight aka Kryder, who has ascended from obscurity by shaking up the dance music industry with multiple “big room” and fire powered releases on Axtone, Size Records, Spinnin’ and Subliminal. Remarkably, he’s achieved his mega producer status by impressing and gaining major support from the likes of Pete Tong, Fat Boy Slim, Steve Angello, Axwell, Bob Sinclair, Erick Morillo and Basement Jaxx.

Recent high profile projects include an international headlining tour, collaborating with Erick Morillo, composing the 2017 “Sensation Chile Anthem” and the launching of his Kryteria Records with his debut single with Steve Angello. In this feature interview, you get an up close and personal look at Kryder’s visions for Kryteria Records and Kryteria Radio, how he finds his balance while on tour and his Swedish House Mafia connection.

I also have to mention, the fantastic 2016 LP “LAYERS.” If you haven’t listened to yet, I have three words for you. “Just do it!” For the feature interview, Zach Miller poses some great questions for KUNGS, ranging from software practices, knowledge of instrumentation and musical expectations to live performance preparation and the constraints of being defined by genres. Issue N°7

Way back in 90s, I was a member of team of highly talented magazine professionals working in the Jazz music industry. I learned many skills from my colleagues and mentors during my 8 year stretch, such as journalism integrity, art direction and graphic design, the importance of building and maintaining business relationships and how perception is reality, sort of. But, I keep thinking of a phrase that was emblazoned into my mind that is still relevant today as it was 20 years ago, “Content Is King.”

As a relatively new EDM magazine, we pay attention to what other publications, competitors and non-competitors, are writing about and how we can separate ourselves and provide our readers with content that is often over-looked or ignored. Granted, the EDM scene is over-saturated with new music releases and new artists jumping in to the game every single day, but that doesn’t mean that they and their music does not deserve coverage. To the contrary, many artists out there are producing quality recordings and are just as exciting as the DJs and producers that are well established and world famous. For our previous 6 issues, we’ve worked very hard on giving some of the lesser known acts some ink within our pages and we’re proud to have done so. Now, that we are on to our 7th issue, we continue to follow that philosophy, however, we are fortunate to also include some bigger names that have huge fan bases.

Inside the following pages, we deliver some news on events that we feel are super cool, recently released and upcoming big new music albums, profiles on artists that you should pay attention to and an exclusive new series titled ‘Music Production 101’ with India’s Sun & Abs discussing gear, software, influences and upcoming new releases, brought to you from our friends at Matt Caldwell PR.

Our Cover Feature and Interview is with Harrison, a great personality on the brink of elevating his stature as a music producer and singer songwriter. It’s a “no holds bar” conversation and he pulls no punches. For those in “Dannic Nation,” when we were approached to interview the world famous DJ about his new endeavors as the label head of FONK Recordings and FONK Radio, it was a no brainer. He was super to speak with and generous with his time, as the feature interview is spread out over 10 pages. Additionally, we have CONRO, who is also on the verge of hitting the big time and an interview with, Brazil to Berlin, Techno visionary Victor Ruiz.

Reviews galore leads off with Berlin based Frans Zimmer, aka Alle Farben and his ‘Music Is My Life’ LP, an album that has been on replay for months in the offices of BSM. Plus, we write on 19 other releases that deserve listens and support. Enjoy and read on!

Issue N°6

Yves V, Audiojack, Timo Maas, and Bro Safari. These four exciting artists get the full-feature, multi-page with Q&A sessions, treatment.

Our Cover Artist, Yves Van Geertsom, known as Yves V has been on a 10 year run as Tomorrowland’s Resident DJ, and has been instrumental in the growth of the event and its off shoot productions Tomorrow World and Tomorrowland Brasil. Leo Weaver delves in to Yves storied history and Karin Haslinger delivers an insightful, yet fun, interview with the currently ranked #34 DJ in the world.

Earlier in the summer, we were approached by Bro Safari’s PR Firm Urban Rebel for an interview opportunity a day before his appearance at this year’s EDC Vegas Festival. Originally published on our website in June, it is fitting to republish within the pages of this magazine simply because of more high profile gigs and a his ‘Pretty Good Tour’ stopping in more than 30 cities across the U.S.

Out of Leeds is Audiojack, DJs, producers and label owner has a new release out—Tuyra. Erik L. Richardson strips down the new music and gets the duo talking about influences, musical standards, familial approval and more.

Timo Maas history spans more than 30 years in the music business. He has had international smash hits, licensed music for the Gaming industry: FIFA and EA, plus work for Budweiser and Hollywood. Pretty much in constant movement with a busy tour schedule, 2016 has seen a slew of new music from the legendary DJ. Most notably, a killer remix project with cohort James Teej Paul McCartney & Wings Nineteen Hundred and Eight Five.

Profiles on Alan Walker, Delta Heavy, Fatima Hajji, Ghastly, and Jason Maek & Zaena, all of whom are enjoying success.

Leading off our Reviews is DJ Shadow, who really needs no introduction. He’s been a leader and influencer for many years and his records certainly back that up. He’s got a new full length album out and Cory Royster gives the review.

At 92 pages, this issue presents its largest folio and feature our talented contributors as storytellers on the fascinating subjects herein. To all involved, a big thank you.

Issue N°5

Women trailblazer’s Christine Tran, Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson and Emma Burgess-Olson, are the subjects of our Spring 2016 Cover Story. Chloe Aiello enlightens with an excellent exposé on the messages, obstacles and the new vision sparked by DISCWOMAN. South Africa’s Black Coffee, a phenomenally successful producer causing all kinds of uproar with his signature “Afropolitan Sound” gets multi-pages of ink describing his his rise fame. Next we felt the need to turn you onto , the outside-of-the-box, sounds of Kneedelus. It’s a collaborative project between Jazz outfit Kneebody and electronic musician Daedelus. Colour The Void, a relatively new act has a new single and we have a Q&A discussing gear, concepts and more.

This issue’s Label Watch is on Spain’s Depaart Records. Run by two remarkably talented producers in Georgeous (Jorges Primo) and Moliner.

Also, we review 20 new releases. It was a difficult choice deciding which one to open the section. Louie Vega’s Starring XXVIII or Joey Negro’s Remixed with Love by Joey Negro Vol.2. It was literally a flip of the coin and Louie won. Both albums are masterpieces and we tell you why, along with words on several releases you need to hear.

Issue N°4

Our 4th issue is full of interesting personalities, some famous, some just breaking through. Daniel Wanrooy, our Cover Feature artist, has been producing his brand of Trance music for a few years now and we give you insight to the road he has taken to become one of the industry’s success stories. For our other feature articles, we give you Flux Pavilion, a well known DNB artist with a relatively new release and GRiZ, a purveyor of what he calls Future Funk. GRiZ, in particular, was a very interesting artist to write about, as he’s involved with philanthropy, weed cultivation and producing kick ass funk infused dance music. We also profile Phil Gerus, a Moscow based DJ with an infinity for Jazz, AFFKT, Markee Ledge, and Flavor Waster, a DC area outfit that is gaining popularity with their unique sound of electronic pop music. For this issue’s Label Watch, we put the spotlight on L.A.’s Play Me Records led by DJ Reid Speed. And finally, Ludovic Navarre aka St. Germain has released his first new LP in 15 years on the Nonesuch label. It kicks off the 20 new releases reviewed inside. Read on!

 Issue N°3

Earlier this summer when the planning started for this issue of BEATSELECTOR, a good bit of time was spent doing research on artists that are deserving of wider recognition.   When we received notification of RUF DUG’s new release Island on Kenneth Bager’s label Music for Dreams, we immediately decided to feature him as our Cover Artist with a Q&A and album review. Caitlin Cline and Erik L. Richardson team up on this interesting piece.   Olivier Giacomotto is another artist that has caught our attention and the feature article by Stephanie Hernandez shines a light on why you should too take notice.   John Vermont, CRIZZLY, VINAI—whom incidently has been in the news recently, M.A.N.D.Y., and Dimond Saints get profiled.   Black Hole Recordings, this issue’s Label Watch, has been around for almost 20 years and has grown into a major Independent label releasing some of the best electronic music from around the world.   And finally, we review 20 new music releases starting with Fred Lee’s take on Giorgio Moroder’s latest full length album Déja Vu.   Read on!

 Issue N°2

Stephanie Hernandez writes up a nice feature on four women DJ acts- Krewella, Brazzabelle, Jack Novak and the darlings NERVO, that are, in our minds, the Femme Fatale Djs of 2015 to watch. From Paris via Skopje, Macedonia, Konstantin Plevnes, aka DJ HELLBLAZER, talks to Karin Haslinger about his relocation to Paris as a child, his 18 Pure Dopeness releases that blends hip-hop, jazz and other genres and who his favorite musicians are.
