Robert Hood & Lyric Hood: Photography by Khris Cowley

Two generations of Detroit spirit land on fabric Records with Robert Hood and daughter Lyric Hood’s vigorous “fabric presents Floorplan” mix, out now in full. Fitting their modus operandi – fast-paced, high-spirited and wholly exhilarating – it’s pulled in early support from Billboard, Resident Advisor, Mixmag, and BBC Radio 1’s Arielle Free with last month’s release of single “You’re A Shining Star,” one of Floorplan’s two exclusives for the mix. “Only God” is the second to follow on the final compilation.

Robert has been a fabric favorite since the club’s earliest years, clocking up over 20 sets in Room 2, including a live session in 2012. “When you walk into Room 2 you feel like you’re walking into a moment,” Robert enthuses. “Once the room pulls you in, a connection is formed between a DJ & the atmosphere in that room.  It’s purely organic.” In 2008, he released Fabric 39 – one of the most revered contributions to the fabric mix canon. With “fabric presents Floorplan,” the story comes full circle. “Of the handful of techno clubs that I’ve shared stories about with Lyric, fabric was usually the one I talked about most, especially that sound system, and the crowds were just crazy.” For Lyric, it’s an honor to bring their gospel roots to the iconic mix series as a family project.

“fabric presents Floorplan” is a joyous collision. Immediately invigorating, they channel church, warehouse and family legacy into 60-minutes of rollicking house. All tracks featured were releases in 2024 or 2025, making it a forward-facing instalment. Between a run of Floorplan records, including a remix of “Weekend Love”Will Clarke’s collab with London-based vocal group House Gospel Choir, they also tap a string of known faces – Groove Armada to Christoph, Mathias Kaden and Low Steppa

Their single “You’re A Shining Star” with a mixed choir vocal assertively kicking in, heard thrillingly proclaiming in the breakdowns – “you’re a shining star, no matter who you are” – looks to Room 2 for inspiration. “One of the unique things about fabric is that the DJ isn’t really the star of the club. The stage in Room 2 is where any and everyone can shine,” Robert explains. On taut techno-fused cut “Only God,” which fuels the mix’s last burst of energy-intensive sonic uplift, the pair said, “We think when you hear these tracks play you can feel an anointing, and the uplifting spirit. Only God could do it. We soak up all that energy of Room 2 and give it right back in these tracks.”

Emerging from a musically rich Detroit upbringing steeped in Motown and vinyl culture, Robert Hood became an early member of the seminal ’90s collective Underground Resistance, helping to spearhead the rise of techno. Going solo, Hood created minimal techno with his Minimal Nation LP. Groundbreaking productions, acclaimed performances, and his own M-plant label followed, until in ’96 he formed Floorplan – an alter ego exploring house-orientated production. Immersed in music from an early age, Lyric eventually caught the same electronic spark that’s driven her father for decades. In 2014, after Hood’s debut Floorplan album “Paradise,” the project evolved as the then-16-year-old Lyric joined him to perform as Floorplan. Two years later, Lyric officially became a full member, and a stack of pulsing house records followed, including “The Masters Plan” – Floorplan’s fourth album and the third with Lyric.

B Jones Returns with A Deeply personal track “Stronger”

Tim Stark

Lyrics, titles … They have a habit of taking on lives of their own, adding extra layers of meaning — sometimes far, far beyond their original intentions. This February’s “Side Effects” by B Jones was one such example and following her pen-to-paper writing of its song, “Stronger” will doubtless be another. Both now carry that […]
