“Atmosphere” and “mood:” in relation to Solarstone’s upcoming (May 2025) artist LP, “innermost,” they’re going to be two descriptives you’ll be hearing a lot of.

Overturing the album itself, opening its singles account (and indeed the first track Solarstone completed for ‘innermost’) is “shivelight.” With it, he affords a first look/listen at a longplayer that differs in structure, tone and feel from any that have come before it.

The single is Richard’s musical encapsulation of the shivelight effect, the one created when shafts of sunlight filter through trees, creating a dappled or shimmering result.

Shadowed by his pads and chords, it opens to deep, resonant baritone guitar strums, which callback to the hook of “Falling” – Julee Cruise’s timeless Twin Peaks theme. Wistful sub-melodies hauntingly echo the call of its siren song harmonies, while breakbeats reinforce the track’s sombre etherealism. As it progresses, delicate fleeting notes break through its otherworldly shade, bringing the track an innate feeling of “hope being kept alive.”

Today’s the day “shivelight” sees the light. You can find it through all the finest sales and streaming platforms “here.” [blackhole.lnk.to/shivelight]

Frankyeffe – Out Of This World EP

Tim Stark

Frankyeffe’s calling it an “EP”, though others might argue it’s closer to a full album. Either way, ‘Out Of This World’ makes one thing abundantly clear: when it comes to midnight studio oil and full-throated clubland firepower, Italy’s Francesco Fava’s not a man to do things by halves. Fresh from his ‘One More Night’ outing […]

Push – Known Universe

Tim Stark

This summer, Push returns to the album format with ‘Known Universe’ – the eighth longplayer in his eminent career. That ‘known universe’ specifically is the hardware-driven studio world that shaped his earliest work. The one that Mike Dierlickx painstakingly reassembled in order to reconnect with the tools, challenges and workflows of his original environment. In […]

Waking Up In A Northern Town by Christian Burns

Tim Stark

There’s been a long tradition of musicians from the north of England honouring their origins through their recordings – one that dates back as far as The Beatles’ penning ‘Penny Lane’. ‘North Country Boy’, ‘Hit The North’, ‘Life In A ‘Northern Town’, ‘The North At Its Heights’, ‘It’s Grim Up North’ – just a few […]
