Nelson Curry

Nelson Curry is best known as the producer of the 1993 rap hit “Dazzey Duks” by the group Duice, a record that became more than just a club favorite, it became a cultural phenomenon.

The song did not just climb the charts, it exploded across the country. Certified two times Platinum, “Dazzey Duks” sold well over two million copies and peaked at number twelve on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1993, helping to define an era of nineties hip-hop and popularize the term Daisy Dukes for short denim cut-off shorts.

In music industry accounts, Al Bell, then president of Bellmark Records, credited Curry as the person who brought the track to his attention and helped guide it toward release. His vision and instincts turned a regional groove into a nationwide smash.

Beyond “Dazzey Duks,” Curry co-produced the hit “Dickie Ride” and was instrumental in helping Southern rapper Pastor Troy secure his first recording opportunities. Much of this work was done while collaborating closely with record executive Tony Mercedes, under the banner of Paragon Productions, demonstrating Curry’s ability to navigate both the creative and business sides of the music industry.

Curry’s involvement with chart-impacting and culturally resonant work throughout the nineties and early two thousands shows a consistent ability to craft sounds that connect with dedicated fanbases and broader audiences alike.

Legacy and Influence

Nelson Curry’s story is a testament to the influence producers have behind the scenes, shaping songs, shaping careers, and shaping hip-hop culture itself. He is widely recognized for helping define the Southern hip-hop sound in the nineties and for nurturing emerging talent at a time when the region was just starting to make its mark nationally. His work helped pave the way for a new generation of Southern artists and producers, and his guidance has been credited with launching multiple careers.

Southern Soul and Carolina Soul Ventures

Never one to rest on past successes, Curry has expanded his creative reach into the Southern Soul music scene, where he has quickly become a respected force and is now considered a pioneer of what is being called Carolina Soul. His first major success in the genre was the hit “Sugaa Shack,” which earned critical acclaim and strong sales, demonstrating his versatility as a producer and his ability to innovate across musical styles.

Curry has also been instrumental in bringing legendary hip-hop artist Doug E. Fresh into the Southern Soul arena, producing the song and video “Southern Soul Party.” His work in Carolina Soul has helped establish the region as the new hub for hot Southern Soul music, with many of today’s top hits coming from the Carolinas because of the path he paved.

For Beatselector Magazine readers, Nelson Curry’s career is a powerful reminder that behind every hit is a visionary who knows how to spot talent, shape sound, and turn cultural moments into lasting impact. From chart-topping rap hits to the rise of Carolina Soul, Curry continues to leave an indelible mark on music history.
