Nas and DJ Premier Confirm Long-Awaited Joint Album as Part of Mass Appeal’s ‘Legend Has It…’ Series

In a monumental announcement for hip-hop enthusiasts, Nas and DJ Premier have officially confirmed their collaborative studio album, set to release in 2025 under Mass Appeal’s Legend Has It… series. This partnership, decades in the making, brings together two titans of the genre, promising a project steeped in the rich traditions of East Coast hip-hop.

A Historic Collaboration

The synergy between Nas and DJ Premier dates back to Nas’s seminal 1994 debut, “Illmatic”, where Premier produced standout tracks like “N.Y. State of Mind,” “Memory Lane (Sittin’ in da Park),” and “Represent.” These collaborations not only showcased Nas’s lyrical prowess but also highlighted Premier’s distinctive production style, characterized by gritty beats, chopped samples, and jazz-infused loops.

Over the years, fans have eagerly anticipated a full-length project from the duo. Hints of such a collaboration surfaced as early as 2006, when Nas publicly expressed his desire to work with Premier on an album. The anticipation reignited in 2024 when they released the single “Define My Name,” commemorating the 30th anniversary of “Illmatic.” That track served as both a celebration and a signal—confirming that the long-rumored album was finally on the way.

Now, with the official announcement, Nas and DJ Premier are set to deliver on a promise nearly two decades in the making.

DJ Premier: The Maestro Behind the Boards

Born Christopher Edward Martin in Houston, Texas, DJ Premier has been a cornerstone of hip-hop since the late 1980s. As one-half of the legendary duo Gang Starr—alongside the late Guru—Premier helped define the East Coast sound throughout the ’90s. Albums like “Step in the Arena” (1991), “Daily Operation” (1992), “Hard to Earn” (1994), and “Moment of Truth” (1998) are considered essential listening for any true hip-hop aficionado.

Beyond Gang Starr, Premier has built an elite production résumé, working with a who’s who of hip-hop’s most respected names.

Highlights from his discography include:

Nas – “N.Y. State of Mind,” “Memory Lane (Sittin’ in da Park),” “Represent”

The Notorious B.I.G. – “Kick in the Door,” “Ten Crack Commandments”

Jay-Z – “D’Evils,” “Bring It On,” “Friend or Foe”

Christina Aguilera – “Ain’t No Other Man” (showcasing his crossover appeal)

DJ Premier’s Signature Style:

DJ Premier is known for his raw, gritty boom-bap sound built around chopped jazz, soul, and funk samples. His beats feature hard-hitting drums, tightly looped melodies, and precise scratching. He often incorporates vocal snippets from other records to create hooks or lyrical punctuations. His production is minimal yet powerful, emphasizing rhythm and lyrical delivery, making him a cornerstone of 1990s East Coast hip-hop.

Mass Appeal’s ‘Legend Has It…’ Series

The Nas and DJ Premier album is a marquee release in Mass Appeal’s newly launched Legend Has It… series, announced on April 16, 2025. The series features seven projects in total, each designed to spotlight and honor the genre’s most iconic artists. Other confirmed contributors include Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Mobb Deep (featuring unreleased material from the late Keith Flint of Prodigy), De La Soul, Big L, and one yet-to-be-announced surprise artist.

With Nas also serving as the co-founder of Mass Appeal, this project is not only deeply personal but strategically significant—aiming to bridge generational gaps and elevate hip-hop’s legacy for both longtime fans and new listeners.

Anticipation and Cultural Impact

The announcement has been met with widespread acclaim across social media, hip-hop forums, and news outlets. It’s more than just a collaboration—it’s a celebration of two master craftsmen finally aligning to deliver a body of work the culture has long yearned for.

As Nas continues to cement his legacy with projects like the King’s Disease and Magic trilogies, and DJ Premier remains a go-to collaborator for both veterans and rising stars, their upcoming album is poised to be one of 2025’s most important hip-hop releases.
